Microsoft Remote Desktop Services CAL: For secure remote access

Remote Desktop Services (RDS) is a feature in Windows servers that lets users access and control a remote computer or virtual machine (VM). It was previously known as Terminal Services. This takes place via a network connection, regardless of whether the user is in the office or elsewhere.

Main features of Remote Desktop Services:

Remote access: Users can access their desktops and applications from any device with an Internet connection.

Centralised administration: Users can manage all their applications and data from one server, which cuts down on IT costs and increases security.

Scalability: RDS can be scaled on multiple servers to support a large number of users.

Security: RDS has a range of security features to keep remote computers and data safe.

Possible uses for Remote Desktop Services:

Work from home employees: RDS lets employees access their workplace desktop computers and applications from home.

Call centres: RDS is a great way to give call centre agents access to the applications and data they need.

Remote applications: RDS lets you publish applications so users can launch them from any device without having to install them on the local machine.

Thin clients: RDS can be used to give users their own personalised desktop environment in the form of virtual desktops.

Benefits of RDS:

Increased productivity: Users can work from anywhere and are not tied to their physical workplace.

Reduced costs: RDS can help cut IT costs by letting you manage applications and data from one place.

Increased security: RDS has a range of security features to keep remote computers and data safe.

Downsides of RDS:

Complexity: Setting up and managing RDS can be complex.

Network requirements: RDS requires a stable network connection to ensure good performance.

Compatibility: Not all applications are compatible with RDS.

Remote Desktop Services CAL: What are CALs and when do you need them?
If you want to license a Windows server that is going to be used as a terminal server, you will need the following licenses:

Windows Server Standard or Windows Server Datacenter

Windows Server CAL

Remote Desktop Services CAL

Just like with other CALs, you can pick between licensing by user or by device for Remote Desktop Services CALs.
You will need to define a licence server role on the Windows server you are using for RDS access. Any server downgrade rights applied are automatically transferred to the Licence Server role. These rights define the CALs required.

Remote Desktop Services CAL: The different licences

There are two basic licensing models for Remote Desktop Services CALs:

User CALs: These CALs are for individual users who access a terminal service remotely.

Device CALs: These CALs for devices that access the software remotely, no matter how many users use the device to access the software.
